Day 2
Today you enjoy an introduction to Cambodia with a tour of Phnom Penh, starting with a visit to Wat Phnom. You then move on to the gilded and beautiful Royal Palace built in 1866 by King Norodom. Here you can find the Silver Pagoda inside of which stands a golden Buddha encrusted with 9584 diamonds and weighing 90kgs, and a Buddha featuring emeralds and Baccarat crystal dating from the 17th century. Afterwards you travel to the south of the city to learn about the darkest period of Cambodia’s history: the regime of the Khmer Rouge, with a visit to the genocide museum of Tuol Sleng. Returning to the city, you take a street food tour led by a local chef to experience the rich diversity of traditional Khmer cuisine. This exclusive private tour gives you the chance to experience the rich diversity of traditional Khmer cuisine. Overnight 4* White Mansion Boutique Hotel or similar (B, D)

Day 3
After breakfast, you leave Phnom Penh for Kompong Thom. On the way you will pass a number of villages and visit the temples of Sambor Prei Kuk, Angkor’s oldest capital. You then transfer to Kompong Thom where you will arrive in the afternoon. Overnight 2* Sambor Village (B, L)

Day 4
In the morning, you leave for Kompong Khleang floating village. Here all the houses are on stilts offering breathtaking views of floodplains, rice fields and water. In the afternoon, you continue to Siem Reap and transfer to your hotel. Overnight 4* Shinta Mani Resort or similar (B, L)

Day 5
In the morning, you leave early to get to the Temple of Beng Mealea in the jungle when it opens at 7:30am. Beng Mealea was built during the reign of Suryavarman II, in the middle of the twelfth century. Far from the bustle of Angkor Wat it gives the visitor the impression of being the first explorer to the temple. After your trip here, you head for Banteay Srei along the base of Kulen mountain to stop for lunch (own expense) at a beautiful restaurant called Devatas which overlooks a lotus lake. After exploring Banteay Srei, a small pink sandstone temple which was erected in the 10th century and is known as the Citadel of Women, you have the rest of the afternoon at leisure back at your hotel in Siem Reap, with an optional evening excursion to the renowned Phare Circus. Overnight 4* Shinta Mani Shack or similar (B)

Day 6
Your day starts with a 7am departure to Ta Prohm, featured in the Lara Croft films, where immense branches have taken root in the stones – hence the nickname of the Jungle Temple. You exit through the atmospheric north gate and drive on to Angkor Thom (the Great City) with its famous Bayon of the 12th and 13th centuries. Your journey of exploration continues with a visit to the East Gate (Gate of the Dead) and the Elephant Terrace, which was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies and the raised Leper King Terrace, built in the 12th century and which features many beautifully sculptured Apsaras. After a break for lunch (own expense), you approach the magnificent Angkor Wat, the famous World Heritage Site where you can admire the soaring towers and extraordinary bas reliefs. Overnight 4* Shinta Mani Resort or similar (B)

Day 7
Leave Siem Reap by road and travel onward past paddy fields to Sisophon in Banteay Meanchey province. En route you can stop at a silk farm where you can experience silk-making in the traditional way from raising silkworms to weaving the silk and dyeing it. You can also stop along the road to meet stone sculptors and watch them at their work. Arriving at your hotel in Battambang around lunchtime, you have a short rest before setting out to discover the charming town of Battambang. A local Tuk-Tuk tour will take you past the elegant colonial French-houses along the river, before you stop at the provincial museum and then at a pretty wooden pagoda which precedes your arrival at an 11th century temple, Wat ek Phnom. On the way, help a family make rice pancakes and talk with local Cambodians about their daily life. You return to the hotel late afternoon. Overnight 2* Bambu Hotel (B)

Day 8
Today you have the opportunity to experience the local way of life and to explore the area on two wheels. The Batambang cycling tour takes you by the side of a small stream where you can see typical houses unchanged for generations, rice paddies, local workshops and much more. You can take part in daily activities such as the preparation of sticky rice, custom knife making, or the preparation of traditional fish paste known as “Prahok”. In the afternoon, you visit a superb 12-13th century temple, Prasat Banon, which towers over the peak of the hill you have just climbed up. From here, you can enjoy the beautiful village countryside scenery, the plains and their pagodas. From here you visit Bat Cave – also sadly known as the “killing caves” on a hill 7 miles southwest of Battambang, where many victims of the atrocious regime met their end. Return to the hotel. Overnight 2* Bambu Hotel (B, L)

Day 9
Today you leave early to drive through the countryside back to Phnom Penh. En route you will see magnificent scenery including paddy fields with large sugar palms and many traditional wooden stilt houses. You stop at Kompong Luong where you board a traditional boat to watch community life on the lake before continuing on the road for about an hour to Kompong Chhnang. Here you have a walk through the village to lunch at a local restaurant (included). Your journey continues to Phnom Penh where you check into your hotel for your overnight stay. Overnight 4* White Mansion Boutique Hotel or similar (B, L)

Day 10
Transfer to the airport for your flight home or enjoy the optional extension of a few days at one of Cambodia’s relaxing beach resorts.
