flights  Flight to Denpasar, Bali

Day 1
You are met upon arrival at Denpasar airport after your flight from the UK and transferred to your hotel in Ubud.

nights 4* Bisma Eight (Garden Suite) Hotel or similar

Day 2
Your tour starts with a drive north to Bedugul, part of the island’s central highlands region renowned for its stunning beauty and three caldera lakes (Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan). The first stop will be the peaceful Botanical Garden, established in 1959 and home to some 2,000 species of plants. After a picnic lunch in the gardens, you visit the regional market at Candi Kuning before heading further north to see the iconic Ulun Danu Temple located on a small jut of land within the calm waters of Lake Beratan. You then continue to Munduk Moding Coffee Plantation, stopping along the way at the village of Asah Gobleg for fine views of Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan (weather permitting). After checking in at the plantation, the rest of the day is at leisure.

nights 4* Sanak Retreat (One Bedroom Bungalow)

Day 3
The first stop on today’s itinerary is Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, the Brahmavihara-Arama. You then continue your journey to the sacred hot springs at Banjar, where the naturally heated water from the springs is believed to have healing properties. The series of pools are lined with beautifully carved stone nagas (serpent deities) and the largest, the main pool, is two metres deep. After a refreshing soak and lunch at a local restaurant, you depart for the coastal town of Lovina. En route you visit the former Dutch capital of Bali, Singaraja which means ‘Lion King’. The harbour town was once a bustling commercial centre with wide boulevards and colonial residences, and architectural evidence of that period remains today. You arrive in Lovina in the late afternoon and check into your hotel.

nights 4* The Lovina (Deluxe Suite)

Day 4
A pre-dawn start to head to Lovina Beach from where you will board a traditional boat and head out into the Indian Ocean. The goal this morning is to spot dolphins, which can travel in pods of up to one hundred at any one time. You return to your hotel to freshen up and for breakfast before leaving midmorning to Subak Guliang, a traditional farming community located east of Ubud. The rest of the day will be dedicated to exploring the local vicinity, take a stroll through local farms and witness the rural life of the Balinese people or learn more about the complexities of rice growing. The architecture of a Balinese village compound dates back centuries and is based on the Asta Kosala Kosali tradition of house building; a method is not dissimilar to ancient art of Feng Shui. This evening you will have the opportunity to spend the night in one of these unique family complexes. Please note that you will be staying in a local family home and facilities are basic. Meals are served in the nearby community-run restaurant, which has a beautiful setting overlooking lush rice fields.

nights Local house compound (Standard Room)

Day 5
A 2am departure is essential for your hike up to the summit of Mount Batur, where you will arrive in time for sunrise. Starting your ascent at 1200m above sea level, the trek to the summit (1717m) will take between 1½ and 2 hours. The reward for the early wakeup call is a stunning vista of the surrounding countryside as well as views of the crater itself. After a simple breakfast it is time to make the descent, allowing time to visit en route the three younger craters and any recent lava flow. Toya Bungkah Hot Springs is the next stop on today’s itinerary. Located in the vicinity of Kintamani, there are two natural pools at these hot springs and legend has it that the heated mineral water inside them is said to cure all sorts of ailments. Enjoy a soothing dip in the pools on the way back to Subak Guliang. Later this morning you will depart Subak Guliang and head to the coastal resort of Manggis, the perfect base for exploring nearby Candidasa and Sidemen. The rest of the day is at leisure.

nights 4* Alila Manggis (Superior Room)

Day 6
After breakfast, travel the short distance to the Alila’s organic garden, which is delightfully set in the shadow of Mount Agung and overlooking the sea. The local gardeners will reveal the agricultural practices of the Balinese farmers and assist with the collection of seasonal ingredients required for your masterclass. You will then be guided through the techniques and flavours required to produce a range of mouth-watering dishes which you sit down and enjoy. In the afternoon visit the village of Tenganan, home of the Bali Aga, considered to be the original inhabitants of Bali. You continue to the 1,000 year-old Hindu Besakih temple, known as the ‘mother temple of Bali’. Situated at around 1,000 metres on the volcanic slopes of Mount Agung, the island’s largest mountain, Besakih is Bali’s most important temple comprising 23 individual but related temples. After your visit, you will return to your hotel.

nights 4* Alila Manggis (Superior Room)

Day 7
After breakfast, you head south to the Balinese Hindu temple at Goa Lawah, known locally as the ‘Bat Cave’ after the hordes of bats that inhabit it. After a brief stop at Kusambu, a small village known for its traditional methods of salt production, you visit Klungkung Palace, also known as Puri Agung Semarapura where the Kertagosa Pavilion is one of the best-preserved parts of the palace and an excellent example of traditional Balinese architecture. You stop also at Gunung Kawi, a fascinating Hindu temple complex with ten rock-cut shrines (candi) carved into the cliff face. The surrounding countryside is extremely lush and the footpath leading down to the temple passes through some beautifully terraced rice fields. Close to Gunung Kawi is Tirta Empul Temple, famous among Balinese Hindus for its holy waters, which are believed to wash away any bad spirits. Upon arrival in Ubud, check in to your hotel and relax awhile before heading to the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), an outdoor theatre where traditional Balinese classical dance and music performances are held. After enjoying the show, you are free to dine in one of central Ubud’s many excellent restaurants.

nights 4*Wapa Di Ume (Lanai Room)

Day 8
Surrounded by ravines, dense forest and picturesque rice paddy fields, Ubud is one of the most attractive towns in Bali and a ‘must-see’ for anyone visiting the island. You have the opportunity today to learn about Bali Usada (traditional healing using natural herbs and spices, holistic therapies and ancient wisdom to cure physical and mental illness) with a private lesson given by an authentic Balinese healer. You then continue your tour with a stroll through central Ubud. This will include a visit to the Threads of Life Indonesian Textile Arts Centre, and you catch a glimpse of typical Bali scenery as you walk for approximately 20 minutes to the Sari Organic Cafe, a small restaurant and farm surrounded by rice paddies and the location for today’s lunch. The tour ends with transfer to the airport or your next island accommodation.
